The Larder

The Larder is a cosy neighbourhood bistro with an extensive menu that covers everything from brunch and burgers to beers, pizza and pasta. For me, though, the waffles are the real standout, and what I always end up ordering when I’m here.

Freshly made with a crisp exterior and a moist, cakey interior, Larder’s waffles remind me of those served at Kindred Folk, down to the heavenly aroma you can smell a mile away. The Red Velvet Waffle seems to be most popular among customers (it’s usually what I see everyone getting), but the regular Buttermilk Waffle is just as good and would be an apt choice if you’re looking for something a little lighter.

The ice cream selection, although sourced from a supplier, is better than I expected (maybe it’s a lighting issue, but the display doesn’t look very attractive). With its mild sweetness and delicate floral notes that linger on the palate, the Lavender Honey is the flavour I normally go for. The Avocado ice cream, reminiscent of Mr Avocado or King Avocado‘s popular avocado shakes, is another great choice. Also must-trys are the Ondeh Ondeh and Strawberry Cheesecake flavours, which do a fantastic job of capturing the essence of their dessert counterparts.

One caveat: the waffles can only be ordered as part of a set that includes a whole waffle and two scoops of ice cream, which may be too much for one person to handle alone, especially after a big meal (I rarely ever come here without a dining companion for that reason).

Service is also excellent here. The staff at Larder are friendly, prompt and attentive. If I have any gripes, it’s that the coffee is disappointingly average, and there are much better options in the area for a good cup of joe, like the newly opened Mong Cha Cha or Coffee by CSS.
