Burnt Cones

Having been impressed by their sister café Up In Smoke a few years ago, I was excited to finally have the chance to try Burnt Cones during a recent trip to Sunset Way. The two gelaterias share a similar (if not identical) menu, with the signature waffles being a standout feature.

Dubbed the Ugly Buttermilk Waffle, this is a waffle that’s certainly not much to look but definitely good enough to eat on its own. With each bite, I was struck by the perfect balance of sweet and savory notes, with the crispy exterior adding a lovely crunch and the light, airy interior being packed with subtle hints of vanilla and a delicate buttery flavour. All in all, this was even better than the waffle I had at Up In Smoke. 4.5/5

I paired the waffles with their unique artisanal gelato, for which Burnt Cones’ is best known for (you’ll be hard-pressed to find flavours like Strawberry Basil, Coconut Lychee and Blood Orange Thyme at most ice cream parlours). On my first visit, I went for the Straciatella (pictured above), which is basically a fancier, milkier version of your standard chocolate chip. Needless to say, it went marvellously well with the waffle. 4/5

The specialty coffee at Burnt Cones deserves a mention as well. Sourced from Sudden Coffee Roasters, their Cappuccino was just as good as the one at the nearby Olla (itself a specialty coffee joint). 4/5

All in all, Burnt Cones is a must-visit in Sunset Way for anyone looking for delectable sweet treats and quality coffee. It’s also the only café in the area that opens till midnight, making it a perfect place to satisfy those late-night sugar cravings.
