Rochester Cafe

A new kid on the block (or rather, an old kid with a new name and a slight revamp), Rochester Cafe was originally a Doi Chaang Coffee outlet before the owners decided to end their franchise agreement and rebrand. They still serve Doi Chaang’s delicious coffee, though – and since the closure of the last Doi Chaang outlet in United Square, this is apparently the only cafe left in Singapore where you can get a cup of Doi Chaang coffee. But back to the main point of this blog.

As it happens, Rochester Cafe’s no slouch when it comes to making a great waffle.

Waffle with Earl Grey and Chocolate Ice Cream ($12)

I’m always impressed by how much a little simple artistry can enhance the visual appeal of a dish, as seen in the photo above. But really, all I care about when it comes down to it is taste, and Rochester Cafe didn’t disappoint with its light, crispy and slightly chewy waffle.

There was a distinct chocolaty tinge that I picked up between bites, but I couldn’t quite tell if it was from the waffle or the chocolate ice cream, which was pretty rich with a smooth, gelato-like consistency. The other flavor my dining companion and I had, Earl Grey, wasn’t strong enough on the bergamot for me, but would be good for people who prefer Earl Grey ice cream with a lighter punch.

Signature Thai Iced Coffee ($6.50)

And because I like Doi Chaang’s coffee so much, I feel like part of this review should be about it. Rochester Cafe retains its full Doi Chaang menu, including the more creative flavors like the Banana Toffee Nut Latte and Lemongrass Americano, but the Signature Iced Doi Chaang (renamed to Signature Thai Iced Coffee) is what I always end up getting. Strong, milky, fragrant and sweetened with brown sugar for a mild caramelized kick, it’s the perfect drink for a hot summer’s day (or any day, really).
