Pontian Express (West Mall)

If you’re looking for a good waffle, Pontian Express is probably the last place you’d expect to find it in. Known for their tasty (but unauthentic) version of Pontian wonton mee, they’re a pretty big franchise with dozens of outlets spread across malls and hawker centres in Singapore.

The West Mall outlet, which features a cha chaan teng-style setting, happens to serve waffles – really good ones at that.

Belgian Waffle with Cookies & Cream Ice Cream ($6.80)

Crispy on the outside without being the least bit mushy on the inside, this waffle surprised me with how nice and firm it was (perhaps the result of me asking the staff to bake it longer). In my experience, waffles with heavy batter tend to come out too thick and mushy – this one had an almost perfect texture all around that made me want to order another one, and I probably would’ve if I hadn’t just had lunch.

Great as the waffle was, the ice cream was your standard Magnolia fare. Then again, it was cookies & cream and you pretty much can’t go wrong with that flavor, factory-made or not. The whipped cream, strawberries and chocolate sauce didn’t add much taste-wise, but visually it served to make the whole dessert photogenic enough for even my lousy photography skills to capture.

Finally, considering what most cafes and restaurants are charging for waffles these days, this was definitely a steal at only $6.80.

NOTE: It’s come to my attention that the standard of the waffles here has dropped pretty severely, so this review should be considered outdated until I get the chance to confirm it.
