A hole-in-the-wall ice cream joint that opens between 4pm-2am every day, Naked Ice Cream is a good place to hit up if you’re in the mood for something sweet for dinner or supper.
There are two waffle options available: the Plain Waffle and the Charcoal Waffle. I opted for the Plain Waffle, which was priced at a very affordable $4. Perfectly crispy on the outside and slightly mushy (but in a good way) on the inside, the waffle was light, fragrant and slightly airy, which made me suspect they’re made from a yeasted batter. It was a tad heavier than other yeasted waffles I’ve tried, but still tasty enough to eat on its own with some chocolate sauce.
Of course, I rarely have a waffle plain, so I chose to have a scoop of Caramel Popcorn Ice Cream with mine. At $5 for a scoop, the ice cream was appropriately caramel-y, and had a nice gelato-like texture. Unfortunately, the generous amount of popcorn embedded in it had already become soft and soggy well before it reached me, which resulted in a rather unpleasant contrast to the rich and creamy ice cream. I did, however, have the foresight to fork out an extra dollar to add some granola as a topping, which distracted from the soggy popcorn with a pleasant crunch.
Other ice cream options range from Hokkaido Milk, to Pistachio, to Cookie Monster – their version of the classic cookies and cream – so there’s plenty of choice for those with more adventurous palates.
The interior of the café is sleek and modern, and I appreciate the affordable prices. But if the place has one thing going against it, it’s the acoustics. On crowded nights, things can get so noisy on the inside that you’re probably better off in the outdoor seating area. It was a packed house the night I came here, and I actually had to shout my order multiple times for it to be heard.
But if you’re looking for something sweet to cleanse your palate after a late dinner, Naked is probably your best bet.
