If you haven’t already guessed, Chulove is a cafe that specialises in *drum roll* churros. From flavours like strawberry, oreo and lemon to pistachio, peanut and marshmallow, these guys seem to have it all… or at least the widest selection of churros I’ve come across in Singapore. As it happens, their waffles are pretty good too—though that’s only, and I do mean only, if you order them freshly baked.
Half Waffle with Matcha Ice Cream and Honey ($5)a.k.a. Premade Nonsense
There are basically two different kinds of waffles here. The first is the premade kind, meaning that the staff will bake the waffles in the morning and leave them to sit on display until a customer orders one, upon which they’ll reheat it. Now, make no mistake, even though these premade waffles may look fairly appetising in the picture above, they really are just terrible. They’re hard, crunchy in a bad way (imagine cardboard crossed with cement), and so damn bland even the honey and powdered sugar sprinkled on top couldn’t hide that. The only reason I don’t dole out a zero rating is because the matcha ice cream I ordered to go along with this glorified Millwall brick was somewhat decent. 1/5
Full Waffle with Vanilla Ice Cream and Dark Chocolate Sauce ($7.90)a.k.a. The Much Better Freshly Baked Stuff
The freshly baked waffle is an entirely different story. Served on an actual plate (a sleek wooden one at that), this wasn’t the lightest or crispiest waffle around, but it had a nice, slightly buttery bite to it that was well complemented by the excellent dark chocolate sauce. The vanilla ice cream tasted like your average store-bought brand, but it was good enough to lend the whole thing an additional dimension of flavour (plus, it’s really hard to go wrong with vanilla). 4/5
Classic Churros ($5.90)The churros here are alright, though the hot ones seem to vary in quality depending on who’s frying them. For more consistent standards, you might want to go with the cold churros which are essentially coated in various sauces then chilled for several hours. 3/5
