Camaca

Camaca is a cafe specialising in sugar-free desserts. Made from natural sweeteners instead of the usual processed stuff, almost everything here is supposed to be lower in calories and GI count, making them suitable for even diabetics.

Healthier choice spiel aside, waffles were, unsurprisingly, what really drew me to this cafe. Though its ice cream—churned out by a funky-looking machine that hyper-cools the liquid contents of a large macaron-shaped capsule before extracting them—is probably its most unique offering.

Waffles & Ice Cream Set ($11)

Camaca describes its ice cream as gelato, but I found it to have a texture that was more like a cross between soft serve and Taiwanese shaved ice. My Tiramisu ice cream had a light and pleasant mouthfeel, and was also satisfyingly flavourful despite being non-alcoholic. As someone who doesn’t normally like tiramisu without a strong Baileys or Kahlua kick, this was one of those rare exceptions that I did enjoy a lot.

The Waffles, which were served together with the ice cream as part of a set, were light and crispy on the outside, but perhaps a tad too soft and eggy on the inside. The inside of these waffles actually reminded me a little of Ya Kun’s French toast, so this might be a plus for you if you’re a fan of that.

Coffee & Brownie Set ($8.50)

I also had a Cappuccino, made from their in-house roasted Sigri AA blend, which was excellent, and a Brownie, which was quite tasty but oh-so-small it was gone before I knew it (most of Camaca’s cakes are, in fact, fairly bite-sized and best enjoyed as part of a high tea session, I think).

All in all, Camaca’s bright, elegant decor and sugar-free offerings make it a wonderful cafe not only for the health-conscious—but anyone with a sweet tooth—to visit.
