Yardbird

Located in Marina Bay Sands, Yardbird Southern Table & Bar offers a contemporary twist on classic American cuisine. Unfortunately, despite my high expectations, my recent brunch experience here left me more than a little underwhelmed.

I started with the Salted Caramel Waffle which, priced at $22, fell far short of my expectations.

The waffle itself was dense and bready, and it came with what can only be described as a meager serving of salted caramel sauce, brûléed bananas and candied pecans. None of these toppings complemented the waffle, and resulted in a rather disconnected dish that did not justify the price. 2/5

Fancying something savory, I ordered the Crab Cake Benedict ($30), a whimsical-looking dish topped with a poached egg and a slice of smoked bacon.

While the bacon was nice and crunchy, and the eggs were well-poached, they didn’t really feel like they fit in with the rest of the dish either. The fried green tomatoes would have worked better if the cornmeal batter had been fried crispier, and the tomato itself was too raw and under-seasoned for my liking. The crab cakes looked and smelled delicious, and should have been the highlight of the plate, but were disappointingly bland and lacking in freshness. 3/5

On a positive note, the service at Yardbird was good, and the staff were very warm and welcoming. The cosy, rustic ambiance of the place almost made up for the lackluster food and jacked up prices – but not quite.
