Co-founded by Sharon Au in 2016 before she left Mediacorp, Style by Style VIBES Cafe now has three outlets in Singapore. The Westgate branch shares a space with QCD Technology (an Apple-authorised service centre) and is a great place to chill. The first thing you notice about this place’s menu is how it attempts to elicit a sense of nostalgia and blend local cuisine with Western fare.
The pictures of the mains didn’t appeal to me that much, though, so I decided to give them a pass and just order a kopi. But then I saw that they had waffles on their menu, and if I could pass up on that I probably wouldn’t have started this blog.
Waffles with Taro Yam Ice Cream ($6.50)The Waffle: Having not had waffles in a long time (three days, to be exact – a long time for me to go without one of my favourite foods), I waited with bated breath for my Waffles with Taro Yam ice cream to arrive… and was thoroughly disappointed. Biting into this waffle, it felt like fate was conspiring to ruin my day. The best thing I can say about it is that it was (slightly) crispy on the outside. There was too much of an eggy taste, though, and worse – it was soft and mushy on the inside, which is exactly how waffles shouldn’t be in my opinion. And then there’s the fact that you’re paying 5 bucks for half a waffle that’s arguably worse (and much pricier) than what you’d get at a HDB confectionery. 1.5/5
The Ice Cream: At least it only cost $1.50 to add on a scoop of ice cream, which fared much better, having a strong but pleasant taro flavour that wasn’t too overwhelming. Still, it couldn’t save the waffle. Needless to say, I definitely wouldn’t order this again. 3/5
Kopi-C ($2.50)The Coffee: The Kopi-C was the saving grace here. I ordered it gao siu dai like I usually do and found it pretty fragrant and smooth. At $2.50 you can obviously get cheaper kopi almost anywhere else, but the bright, relaxing ambiance of the place makes it worth the money, especially if you’re looking to kick back and take advantage of the mall’s free WiFi. 3.5/5
