Since it opened as a tiny café in middle of 2019, Olla Specialty Coffee has doubled its shop space and expanded its menu beyond the usual sweet treats and coffee selections it initially offered. It now has a range of light meals—such as open-faced sandwiches, cheese toast and shashuka—in case you’re looking for something a bit more filling.

The Waffle & Ice Cream: Of course, my main objective (as always, when heading down to cafés like this) was to sample the waffles. The one Olla serves up is the crispy, slightly dense buttermilk kind that, oddly enough, never really tastes buttery or milky enough for me. Olla’s was a bit on the dry side too, alas, and the Gula Melaka gelato that I paired with it was rather unremarkable as well. 3/5

The Coffee: The real highlight of Olla is in the ‘Specialty Coffee’ part of its name. They have a varied menu of hot and cold beverages to choose from, but I always go for the Magic whenever I’m here, which is essentially a double ristretto flat white. True to its description on the menu, this drink touts a slightly intense flavour topped with a layer of velvety milk. 4/5
The café itself is still rather modest in size, and the décor clean and minimalist, though the natural wood furnishings and limited seating give it a more intimate feel. It’d probably be a nice place for a casual date during less busy hours.
