A charming café in Lavender that effortlessly blends rustic and contemporary design elements with a touch of industrial flair, Oberstrasse’s name pays homage to a street in Switzerland where the owner once resided.
The ambience strikes a balance between classiness and cosiness, thanks to elegant lighting and dark-accented furniture. While the café is best known for its brunch and rosti dishes, the waffles leave much to be desired.
It would be an understatement to say that the Waffles here fell short of my expectations. Dry and with a texture far too reminiscent of cardboard, I found myself wishing I could rewind time and pick a different dessert from the menu after the first few bites of these.
Moreover, the serving of the ice cream flavour-of-the-day, raspberry, was quite measly, and the taste wasn’t much different from your average storebought Magnolia or Wall’s raspberry ripple.
The matcha sauce served alongside added an extra dimension of flavour, but it didn’t complement the waffle or the ice cream very well and just ended up feeling like an unnecessary, out-of-place addition.
I ordered a Cold White (basically an unsweetened cold brew with milk) to cap off my meal, only to realise that I’d already consumed too much caffeine that day. I ended up giving it to my niece. According to her, the coffee was strong and well-balanced, but otherwise not particularly memorable.
Despite the underwhelming waffles and average ice cream, I plan on revisiting Oberstrasse to try their rosti, which is said to be the highlight of their menu. I’d definitely avoid ordering the waffles again, though, especially with the Lavender area being chockful of better alternatives like Sweet Cheeks Gelato and Holy Cow Creamery.
