As someone who’s always dreamt of running a cafe (but probably wouldn’t have the business acumen or work ethic to), it’s always nice to read about success stories like Denzy Gelato.
Pouring your life savings into any venture can be a risky move, especially in the F&B biz where there seems to be just as many old cafes winding down as there are new ones popping up. But with three thriving outlets spread across the east side of Singapore after just having established themselves two years ago, it’s a risk that Denzy’s founders can say has paid off.
While their flagship outlet next to Bishan Bus Interchange isn’t going to win any awards for its simple, sparse decor, the waffles and ice cream certainly should.
The Waffle: Seeming like it would be on the thick and heavy side at first glance, Denzy’s waffle actually turned out to be the opposite and was very similar to Revelry’s and Shrove Tuesday’s light and airy yeasted waffles. A very pleasant surprise. My one minor gripe was that it wasn’t quite as crispy as I thought it would be, but that’s nothing requesting it be baked longer can’t fix. All in all, this waffle was good enough that I felt I could easily have had another one—and I might have, if I hadn’t been watching my diet that day. 4.5/5
The Ice Cream: The Whisky & Salted Pecan Brittle gelato was another delight. Denzy’s website describes it as being “a mix of pecan crunch swirled in with a bold whisky base” and that’s exactly what you get. Gelato that’s soft and smooth and crunchy and sweet all at the same time with a nice, strong alcoholic kick. 4/5
Again, if I hadn’t been watching my diet that day, I would’ve ordered a second round of this along with the waffle. (Who knew running a waffle blog could be hazardous to one’s weight?)
