Smile Dessert

Smile Dessert is a fairly new (in Singapore, at least) dessert chain that serves bingsu, lava cakes, soufflé pancakes and a medley of other popular desserts.

While their flagship café in Bugis is famous for its bright pink Instagrammable decor, this newly opened outlet at Clementi Mall embraces a white minimalist theme with some green accents.

Of course, waffles are also a highlight on the menu, which was the main reason I decided to pay Smile Dessert a visit.

Unlike the other items on the menu (priced at almost $9 for a slice of cake and $18 for a bingsu), the waffles were reasonably priced, with all options costing $9.90 or less (not including GST and service charge, of course).

I ordered the Tiramisu Waffle, which came quickly (under ten minutes) and in a sizeable portion. Served with two small scoops of ice cream and a coffee-infused mascarpone cheese sauce, this would definitely be enough for two people to share as a post-meal dessert.

The waffle had a thick and crispy exterior, but unfortunately, it was too soft and squishy on the inside for my liking. However, if you prefer denser and spongier waffles, you might enjoy it.

The ice cream had an interesting flavour profile, to say the least. Intended to be tiramisu-flavoured, it had a tangy and slightly cheesy kick to it instead. While I appreciated the light and soft texture, I wasn’t particularly a fan of this flavour.

Overall, my experience at Smile Dessert was a mixed bag. While I dug the ambience and the aesthetically pleasing presentation of my dessert, neither the waffle nor the ice cream wowed me in any way.

I can’t see myself coming back for a second visit. It’s worth noting that the café’s space includes a ball pit, occupying about a third of the area, so it can get pretty noisy if parents bring their kids to play here.
