Chirashi-Ai

Taking over the spot that Caffe Pastore used to occupy is Chirashi-Ai, a casual Japanese eatery serving up affordable don bowls, milk teas, cakes and coffee.

Waffles are also on the menu, and I just so happened to be in the mood for some when I walked by. (Then again, when am I not in the mood for waffles?)

At $5, the Matcha Waffle is a steal even if it’s only half a waffle. Light, crisp and buttery moist on the inside, this was a very fragrant and flavourful waffle (I’m guessing from vanilla extract being used in the batter). The only downside was that it had virtually no green tea flavour despite being advertised as a matcha waffle. Still, it was tasty enough that I was happy to order another one and wolf it down just as quickly. 4/5

For $3, you can add on a scoop of Japanese gelato. I picked the Goma Gelato, which was soft and smooth but not as strong in the black sesame department as I would’ve liked. It was a good companion, nonetheless, to a great waffle (the ice cream here has an almost paste-like texture, which pairs well with the crispness of the waffle). 3.5/5

All in all, even though I haven’t tried anything else on Chirashi-Ai’s menu, its main offering—the don bowls— seem well-liked by other reviewers. And I would, of course, wholeheartedly recommend this cafe for its waffles.
